It’s Day 1 of our Holidaze Sips recipe week and today I bring you a
Hot Buttered Rum Tea Mocktail

I've always been intrigued by Hot Buttered Rum! When I set out to create our
New Hot Buttered Rum black tea, I had two goals in mind.

1. Include fresh ground spices in our tea (just like the best rum batter recipes).

2. Create a tea that would give new meaning to the traditional Hot Buttered Rum recipe drink.

There are endless Hot Buttered Rum recipes that call for hot water. As an admitted tea addict, tea seemed like the logical choice to give this drink a new lease on life. Tea is good for you, and using tea is an easy way to make something so sinfully decadent a little bit good.

What Is Hot Buttered Rum?
Hot buttered rum is traditionally made with rum, hot water, butter, sugar, and spices.  It gained popularity before the American Revolution. The drink was made at home when rum was cheap and affordable.  It's said that tea was kept in locked boxes but even the poorest farmer would offer his rum bottle to a stranger.

Batter Matters!
The concept behind hot buttered rum is to make a hot buttered rum batter. Historically, the batter is made with butter, sugar, and spices. This tradition is delicious, but it's not very pretty. Butter and water (even made into tea) don't really mix. The trick is to add an emulsifier or ice cream which already has emulsifiers. The addition makes the batter sweet and creamy. It also helps to blend all of the gorgeous ingredients for the big show!

Change it up!
There are endless possibilities to adapt this recipe!  We have experimented with adding ground ginger and star anise.  The best tip would be to use fresh-ground organic spices for the best batter results!  Experiment and find what you like best.

This sounds so good…might just have to go shopping for some additional ingredients not readily available in my home (like ice cream) :-)
